Visitors to Palma rarely miss to stroll through one of the big market halls of the city. Fascinated by the abundance of produce and products, the hustle and bustle, the smells and noise. Markets have always been the heart of a town. The place to do your groceries, meet others, get the latest news while waiting in line for your turn. Most of us have our favorite vendors for each category. People we know and trust. Actually, I even have a particular market I love and confide in. El Mercat Ecològic, the ecological farmers’ market in Palma, offers certified organic products in an extraordinary laid-back atmosphere.
Palm trees are casting a semishade on the stands. All of them nicely draped in different types of lenguas mallorquinas, the traditional Mallorcan pattern. Under the trees of Plaça dels Patins farmers and producers from all over Mallorca gather twice a week. Young families with their kids, elderly couples, students and business people alike are regulars at the market. Just walking along the lush array of seasonal fruit and vegetables is a great pleasure. And they taste delicous!
On a sunny Saturday or Tuesday morning the aromas of celery and herbs mingle with the smell of fresh bread. The bakers here often use ancient domestic grains that have been rediscovered and cultivated. Other than industrial bread it is rich in taste even after a few days, plus it is a vital source of minerals and vitamins.
All products on the Mercat Ecològic are strictly certified by CBPAE, the Balearic council for organic products. Confirming that the farmers are devoted to the sustainable cultivation of their products. Surely a lot of work, but it makes all the difference. You can taste it. And by buying at places like Mercat Ecològic you can make a difference, too.
