February on Mallorca is always a miracle to me. The air is still crisp, the sky deep blue and the silhouette of the Tramuntana clear cut on the horizon. The Mediterranean sea that has been rough from the Northern winds is reflecting the low sun like a mirror. Yellow and white florets sprinkle the new green. And all of a sudden the buds on bare branched trees explode into gorgeous blossoms. Almond blossom season is starting again.
At the beginning of the year Mallorca is like a sleeping beauty. There are almost no tourists on the island and even the locals take a break. Travel to big cities or tropical beaches and flee from the cold of their homes that often don’t have proper heating. My favorite getaway though are the small roads and the meadows. Cycling or hiking I am looking for the first heralds of spring. And marvel at the tiny yellow blossoms of the vinagrellas that are all over the place at Finca Galatzó. A few days ago we had them on our plates at a fabulous dinner with friends at Clandestí. The taste of happiness.
