On a cold and windy day there is nothing like a place that warms the heart and stomach. I fell in love with La Mirona years ago when it was a grocery store with a few tables and a lunch menu. Over time, it became the small cozy restaurant it is today. There is no written menu but Pere Armengol and Amàlia Suquet are always happy to tell their guests what’s for dinner the night. And make you feel at home right away.
On my last return I noticed that same sensation I described in my first blog post about La Mirona. The memory of a meal at the house of Italian friends. Maybe it was the mushroom carpaccio with parmesan that brought back the picture of long sunlit days with excellent food. Yet it was only the first of more delicious dishes to come.
Among them one of my all-time favorites: alcachofas con jamón ibérico, artichoques with iberico ham. Followed by cod with green peas in a spicy tomato sauce. A colorful desert of warm chocolate on a crisp bread topped it all off. And other than the quote on the mirror behind the bar insinuates, at La Mirona it is not hunger that makes the best sauce. But the dedication and love of Amàlia and Pere.
An expericence that’s definitely worth sharing. Therefore, all dishes are para compartir, my perfect setting for a dinner with family or friends. The small tables are surrounded by shelves filled with wine and preserves. You can still take a bottle or a jar home but clearly La Mirona passed the baton of neighborhood store to the new Colmado Sant Jaume next door.
Recently, a couple of luxury venues have been added to Carrer Sant Jaume, the noble historic street. But you can still find the true gems in the displays of the colmado or behind the wooden door of La Mirona. And while the expensive places sparkle and shine, it seems to me that the light filtering through the single window of La Mirona is particularly bright.
