Who wouldn’t love a small store just around the corner that sells everything for your daily need? A fresh baguette, some seasonal fruit and vegetables, pasta, a piece of cheese and some crackers maybe? Actually, you are also running short on shampoo or toothpaste. And didn’t you want to bring some flowers and a bottle of wine along for the dinner invitation at a friend’s home, tonight? All of this and a lot more you’ll find at Colmado Sant Jaume, most recent grocery store in Palma’s old town.
Majo, co-founder and part of the La Molienda team for many years, has always loved to cook. But there was no place near her home where she could at least buy some fresh produce. And when Fornet de la Soca moved to Pl. Weyler a while ago not even bread. So why not establish her own corner shop in the vacant rooms of the Fornet? That’s how wonderful Colmado Sant Jaume was established a few weeks ago.
Majo focusses on sustainable products and brands. She likes to be in touch with her customers, ask for their preferences and recommend something out of her carefully selected range of goods. Colmado Sant Jaume is still work in progress and there is something new in store every day. I was excited to find peanut butter that contains nothing but roasted peanuts. You think that sounds weird? Well, try it yourself – and try to find another store in Palma where you can get that.
With grocery stores it is like with the Big Yellow Taxi: you don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone. Surely there was a time when people were fascinated by those huge supermarkets and their vast choice of products. Today we welcome the return of the colmado, the corner store that offers whatever we really need. Plus some things to treat ourselves from time to time, selected by somebody who knows and cares about her customers. Because they are neighbors, many of them even friends. And you meet them at the colmado. That’s why places like Colmado Sant Jaume are an essential part of the quality of life in our barrios.
