What may sound like a perfume or fashion brand is actually the name of a restaurant. 1661 Cuina de Banyalbufar offers a modern version of traditional Mediterranean cuisine and attracts locals and visitors from all over Mallorca. At lunch time, cyclists and hikers meet at the 17th century building on the main street of beautiful Banyalbufar. And sometimes also a famous chef who loves to come here with his family.
We found a table on the narrow boardwalk in front of the restaurant. The menu of 1661 Cuina de Banyalbufar was a read of mouth-watering dishes: Marinated zucchini salad and buffalo mozzarella with nectarine, serrano and lime-mint dressing. Sea bass fillet with beetroot risotto, almond butter, horseradish, salt lemon and almonds. Once more we praised the great Mallorcan habit to share your plates.
1661 Cuina de Banyalbufar is run by a German family who has been living on Mallorca for many years. Julia Bürgel and her brother Tobias are in charge of the restaurant while their parents Christa and Frank run the kitchen with great passion and loads of fresh produce from the island.
Two years ago, Tobias opened another fabulous restaurant, Amaya, in Santa Catalina. The former fishermen’s village has long become one of the most vibrant barrios in Palma for eating out. In Banyalbufar with its terraced vineyards by the sea, however, life seems to move at a slower pace. We enjoyed watching the relaxed street life on the costal route across the Tramuntana.
