Have you ever wondered how life looked like behind the ancient walls of the medieval buildings in Palma’s casco antiguo? Travel back in time to the 17th century when aristocrats and rich townspeople inhabited the gems of the old town that now house museums and flagship stores. If you want to get an idea of their life and their living rooms visit Can Balaguer, one of the city’s most emblematic buildings. After long years of reconstruction the noble mansion on Carrer Unio recently opened its doors again to the public.
Some of Palma’s hotels and museums offer a view behind the facades as well. And if you are lucky, you might get a glimpse of a private patio of a noble town palace near the cathedral or in La Calatrava. But how the original residents of those places used to live in earlier times remains a mystery to us. This is where Can Balaguer steps in.
The impressive town palace was not only carefully renovated. Its first floor – the planta noble – has been outfitted with furniture and accessories from this but also from similar splendid buildings like Casal Solleric. Hence la casa possible, as Can Balaguer’s concept is called. Of course, the title suggests an ideal home for the wealthiest people only. So don’t be surprised to find a music room with a church organ that Josep Balaguer once bought for his home.
