When I discovered Simple Food Bar in Santa Catalina it instantly reminded me of my last visit to Williamsburg. My days there started with a bagel and a smoothie at The Bean, our neighbourhood coffee shop. A fab place to grab a decent cappuccino, a freshly squeezed juice or a healthy snack. Simple Smart Food works along the same lines.
We all love long meals with family or friends. But often, especially during the week, we don’t have the time or the money to sit down for a multi-course menu. When Isabelle Aberman was missing a place for fast health-food on her way to work and in her short lunch breaks, an idea was born. And soon after the launch of Simple, her cool food bar in Santa Catalina, she opened a second one at lively Plaça del Mercat just a few weeks ago. When we came around the other day I happened to meet Isabelle while she was having lunch with her family – regulars, too.
The name says it all. Simple’s menu consists of easy, yet creative recipes that are prepared in front of the customers by Sofia, Althea and Marcelo, the cheerful team behind the small wooden counter. Smart food stands for local, seasonal and often organic produce. Right now it’s the perfect time for light soups, salads, and smoothies. And everything that goes with water melon. Isabelle designed a chic, yet plain interior – bright natural wood, lime stone, and a wall with a piece of vertical garden.
My choice of the day was the Veggie Sandwich with hummus, avocado, rocket and tomato, plus a Pink Beet juice, made from apple, beetroot, lemon, carrot and ginger. The freshly blended veggies and fruits are my favourite snack any time of the year. In the colder months, I always go for ginger to fuel my immune system. Worked perfectly well on that trip to New York in cold March.
