Twice a year, Maria Trepat and Alexia Izu, founders of Suite 13, invite Mallorcan designers to showcase their latest styles. What usually starts as a lovely presentation late afternoon eventually turns into a lively party. Tonight, the design showroom at Suite 13 took place for the third time, and friends and guests were piling in as DJ Paco Colombàs Mir aka Jason Todds tended to some cool R&B vibes.
For the first time this year, Christina was part of the team. Just a few weeks ago, she moved into the basement of Suite 13 where she now proudly presents her own label Maravillas Bags. I had met her before and right away fallen in love with the beautiful soft leather bags that she designs and produces in her new workspace. Maria and Alexia just got the last pieces of their own fall/winter-collection shipped to Palma. The Suite 13 style features a wonderful simplistic elegance – my definite favorite was a black woolen jumpsuit, now hanging in my own closet.
I am always surprised by the multitude of fancy design brands based on the island. Akaknits with Annika and Amanda Nyberg’s high-class collection made from Scottish cashmere I had seen before in their store in Santa Catalina but Ecologic Cosmetics, which was already founded in 1993, was all new to me. And then there was Conalma Design, beautiful furniture made from special pieces from olive, pine and oak trees from Binissalem. And there was more to discover, jewelry, bags, and shoes, all 100% made on Mallorca – representing the island’s great creative potential.
