The large sunny terrace of Es Baluard has always been a fascinating place. On the edge of the city and yet right in the middle of it. A great spot to linger after a visit to the museum. Sit on the broad city wall and enjoy the spectacular view over the Bay of Palma. From the medieval skyline with the cathedral, past the marina and all the way to Castell de Bellver. At Mar i Luz you can now enjoy the fabulous vista with a drink and a bite to eat.
The elevated wooden deck of the newly opened bar and restaurant is surrounded by Palma’s historic rampart. A small pond, large sculptures, dwarf palms and rosemary bushes and the white awnings contribute to the feel-good atmosphere.
Mar i Luz is the perfect place for a sundowner. For rainy or chilly days there’s also tables inside the modern glass cube.
Friends meet for a beer, making big plans, business women stop over for a quick coffee, a young couple takes a break and a glass of wine. The menu is bistro-style and rather short, offering a selection of aperitivos and small dishes like salads, croquetas and patatas bravas. But that may change with the season.
Like the exhibitions at Es Baluard. Palma’s museum of modern and contemporary art has been attracting art lovers for more than 20 years. The concrete and glass architecture is masterly integrated in the 16th century fortification. So, in addition to the displayed works of art, the building itself is worth a visit. So is the museum shop and last but not least the bar on the unique terrace.
