Mallorca is a great place to get a new pair of shoes. In fact, footwear has been made on the island for centuries. Today, traditional manufacturers and young creative designers can be found here next to a global player of the industry. The Museu del Calçat i de la Indústria, the Mallorca Shoe Museum in Inca, tells the eventful history of the long-established craft.
It‘s only a few steps from popular Cafè Inca to the former army infantry baracks that have been beautifully restored. Where the Museum of Footwear and Industry houses a permanent collection as well as changing exhibitions.
Cabinet of Wonders
Displaying tools and machinery from pre-industrial times to the 20th century. Next to historic photographs and advertising campaigns, or furnishings from former factory offices.
And of course, a huge variety of footwear. Primitive sandals and working boots, just as high heels and welted shoes. Not only from well-known local brands such as Camper, Carmina or Bestard. A Cabinet of Wonders features a unique collection of eccentric models and historic shoes from different parts of the world.
European Museum of the Year
The interactive concept makes the vivid exhition an exciting destination for families with children. A time tunnel invites you to embark on a sensory visit to a historic shoe factory. And kids can even design their own shoes in a small workshop. So it comes as no surprise that the Mallorca Shoe Museum is one of the European Museums of The Year.
The importance of the profession is also reflected in the fact that shoemaker is a common family name in many languages. One of the most basic crafts, literally. Even if an essential part of the wardrobe has long become a fashion item rather than a sheer necessity.
