When the King of Spain comes to Mallorca the official receptions are held at La Almudaina next to the Cathedral in Palma. The residence of the royal family on the island, though, is the Marivent Palace. Even if you haven’t been on the list of guests visiting the estate in Cala Major, you have the opportunity to at least wander the Marivent Palace Gardens.
The Park
The park is an example of a Mediterranean garden and an open-air museum at the same time. With twelve sculptures by Joan Miró forming a permanent exhibition of contemporary art.
Couples stroll on the gravel walk under the shade of lush trees. Parents rock their toddlers in the calming atmosphere of the urban oasis. While art lovers seem absorbed in thoughts or just immersed in front of the avant-garde art works.
Miró Mallorca
Some visitors come to the Jardines de Marivent from the nearby Miró Foundation. Others learn only now about the opportunity to visit the museum and the studio of the famous artist who used to live and work just 400 meters from here.
Two sculptures marking the spots in the central alley are visible from different perspectives. The largest of the group, called figure, is a two meter personnage that rises in the center of a lawn-covered area.
Conque offers a poetic vision, although it was just a small plastic bottle Miró found during one of his walks on the beach that inspired him. To create a fanciful form that can be read as a metaphoric body of a sublimated vagina.
As the view and interpretation of the artworks change with the perspective the trees and plants of the Marivent Palace Gardens alter with the seasons. The park is always green, yet the shades are varying.
From the intense hues of spring to rather mature tones in winter days. Colorful blossoms appear and decay while the sun bathes the scenery in new light again and again.
The Marivent Palace Gardens are open from 9 to 20 h during the summer, from 9 to 16.30 h during the winter months, and closed from 15 July to 15 September. Entrance is free.
