The quiet town at the foot of the Tramuntana is not quite as popular as some of the other mountain villages. Not yet, but hikers and cyclists have been stopping over here for years. Enjoying a break in the shadows of the plane trees that line the streets with the beautifully restored sandstone houses. Now, Mercat Tramuntana adds kind of an urban touch to Puigpunyent. And a great place to take a break and have breakfast or lunch.
Coming from Palma, the bright yellow parasols on the large terrace greet you as soon as the town comes into sight. Inviting you to have a cool drink, a snack or a cup of coffee.
The menu offers light dishes like salads, sandwiches, pizza and focaccia, plus a choice of daily specials. A classic at Mercat Tramuntana is the sourdough bread with canned fish. And the Cesar Salad is among the best on the island.
The name Mercat Tramuntana hints at the second part of the Puigpunyent deli. Select wines and aperitifs to take away. Mistral coffee blends, fine chocolate and other delicacies that you won’t find in the local supermarket.
Like in a colmado, a traditional neighborhood store. To treat yourself or a loved one. And because Alexia and Daniel want to add something to the community and not compete with others.
The two founders came from Malta to Galilea and were happy when they learned about the opportunity in neighboring Puigpunyent. They created a place to relish tasty homemade food, and to meet people from different countries while enjoying the sun and the mountain view.
And as a weekend starter, Mercat Tramuntana hosts a special pop-up every Friday night.
