Usually, we don’t like to walk in circles. If you find yourself back at the beginning, you don’t get any further. However, circular walks are something completely different. Getting back to the starting point makes the logistics much easier. And with every step along the way you set off on a new path. Here are 10 of the best routes for circular hikes on Mallorca. From easy walks to medium tours of up to 10 km and around 500 meters in altitude to more challenging hikes such as the one around Puig de Tossals Verds.
1. Punta de n’Amer
One of the lesser known castles on Mallorca is the Castell de sa Punta de n’Amer. Located in a natural reserve between Cala Millor and Sa Coma, the fortified watch tower is a popular destination for an easy circular hike from Sant Llorenç. A narrow path through pine forest and dunes leads you to the castle by the sea.
2. Es Far del Cap Gros
Once you’ve reached an altitude of about 200 m, the short loop trail from Port de Sóller to the Refugi de Muleta and the lighthouse is a mostly relaxed walk. Across ancient cultivated land, past centuries-old olive groves with donkeys and quietly grazing sheep. Unique vistas of the circular harbor bay and its surrounding high peaks make it a perfect little tour.
3. Fornalutx
This Sóller valley hike leads you through the orchard of Mallorca. 10 km past orange and lemon trees to the picturesque village of Fornalutx and further to Biniaraix. A beautiful way to get familiar with the cultural landscape and enjoy the products made from the citrus fruits growing here.
4. Lluc
Lluc is located in the heart of the Tramuntana mountains. Hiking around the monastery you enter a unique diverse landscape that has been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. A popular route leads past a rock called the Camell, an impressive stone formation that precisely looks like a petrified camel.
5. Parc Natural de Llevant
The great unknown on the island is the Wild East of Mallorca. However, there’s a dozen hiking trails of stunning beauty in the Parc Natural de Llevant. The mountains here may be less rough than in the Tramuntana but nature is abundant and the views are just amazing.
6. La Trapa
The large round platform sits 250 meters above sea level and offers a spectacular vista of Isla Dragonera, the small island just off the southwest coast of Mallorca. If you hike from Sant Elm to La Trapa and see La Dragonera from above, you’ll realize that it actually looks like a sleeping dragon. Although this is not a difficult tour you need to be sure-footed to enjoy the climb.
7. Valldemossa
Valldemossa is not only a popular destination, it’s also the starting point for a number of scenic hikes. From the ridge of the mountains you get unique views from coast to coast. The trail was once built by Archduke Salvator as a bridle path. To get there, though, you have to tackle a steep ascent.
8. Penyal d’Honor
From Bunyola, a steep staircase leads into the ancient holm oak forest. Follow the historic routes of the charcoal burners all the way up until you reach the rocky summit of Penyal d’Honor just above the tree line. A beautiful hike through shady woods with a unique rock house on your way back to town.
9. Talaia d’Alcúdia
One of the most exciting circular hikes on Mallorca is the route across the Victoria peninsula. The highest peak of this 5 hours tour, the Talaia d’Alcúdia, offers a spectacular view of both the bay of Pollença and the bay of Alcúdia. On a clear day you can even spot Menorca in the distance.
10. Tossals Verds
This extensive Tramuntana along deep gorges and narrow paths is rewarding you with stunning panoramic views. Starting from the Cúber water reservoir you soon leave the trees behind and enter a rocky world inhabited by goats, accessible only on foot or with donkeys. And the Refugi de Tossals Verds is a great place for a picnic, or even an overnight stay.
