For many hikers the journey is the reward. Others are only satisfied when they have reached the summit. On these panoramic hikes on Mallorca, you can have it all. Ten scenic routes with breathtaking views. Be it the Tramuntana mountains, a World Heritage Site for a reason. Or 360 degrees over the entire island. Across the vast plains to the coast. And out onto the sparkling blue Mediterranean. Sometimes you have to go high up, other times it is enough to climb a hill. The tours are beautiful at any time of year. In winter, the low sun outlines the silhouettes. And in spring, it’s the colors that are particularly intense.
1. La Trapa
The former monastery was built by Trappist monks some 200 years ago. A large round terrace 250 meters above sea level offers a spectacular vista. And if you ever wondered how Isla Dragonera, the uninhabited island just off the southwest coast of Mallorca, got its name, you’ll find the answer here at La Trapa.
2. Cor de Jesús
The white statue high above Esporles reminds of the one in Rio de Janeiro. And the view from the platform at Cor de Jesús is maybe just as heavenly. The tall white statue overlooks the whole valley, the endless Tramuntana mountain range and the Mediterranean Sea to one and the bay of Palma to the other side.
3. Valldemossa
Many visitors to the island consider the picturesque village the essence of Mallorca. But Valldemossa is not only a popular destination, it’s also the starting point for a number of scenic hikes. From the ridge of the surrounding mountains you get unique views from coast to coast.
4. Cornador Gran
From Cornador Gran the panorama of the surrounding highest Tramuntana mountains is simply stunning. In the distance the orange valley of Sóller and the Mediterranean blend in with the sky. Heading back towards Sóller, take the scenic route through the Barranc de Biniaraix.
5. Puig de L’Ofre
The last half hour to the top of Puig de L’Ofre the path is steep and rocky. And on the final meters you may have to use your hands. But if you’re not already out of breath by then, the 360-degree panorama from the summit plateau will surely take your breath away. Cúber and Gorg Blau sparkling to your feet like giant sapphires.
6. Puig de Massanella
From the very top of the distinctive double peak of Puig de Massanella you are overlooking the Tramuntana mountains, the Cúber reservoir and the Mediterranean Sea. To the other side of Mallorca’s third highest mountain you can see the island’s flatlands extend to the Parc Natural de Llevant on the distant horizon.
7. Penya des Migdia
Going up to Penya des Migdia in the morning you enter an ancient watchtower from the shady side only to exit into bright sunlight. And marvel at a vista of the Northern coast that even gets more impressive the higher you climb. Enjoy the gentle breeze and maybe look out for pirates on the Mediterranean.
8. Bec d’en Ferrutx
Like a giant tooth the Bec de Ferrutx rises on the edge of the bay of Alcudia in the Parc Natural de Llevant. The view from the top is overwhelming. But make sure to watch your step, the final ascent is literally a ridge walk. Not quite as demanding as it appears from below, yet no less impressive.
9. Santueri
The Castell de Santueri sits on a table mountain near Felanitx. One of the rock castles on Mallorca, it was built by the Romans, fortified by the Arabs and conquered by King Jaume I in a battle that lasted more than a year. You can walk around the entire hilltop fortress, with spectacular views of the neighboring monastery of Sant Salvador and the Serra de Llevant.
10. Puig de Randa
Imagine a 360 degree view of Mallorca: From the bay of Palma along the Tramuntana mountains all the way to the northern shore and the bay of Alcúdia, further on to the Península de Llevant and via Colonia San Jordi back to the capital. Puig de Randa is the magic place at the heart of the island that offers such a breathtaking panorama.
