Sant Sebastià '24: Palma in Party Mood

Los Reyes have barely returned home when Palma is in party mood again, looking forward to the next big fiesta. From tomorrow on, the city is celebrating its patron saint Sant Sebastià. For two weeks, there will be music, dancing, exhibitions, and much more. Moreover, it involves several fierce demons and beasts and lots of fire and pyrotechnics. Most of the Sant Sebastià ’24 events will take place open air and free of charge.

The Awakening of the Dragon

The spectacle begins on January 13 with the awakening of the Drac de na Coca, the central figure of the Sant Sebastià festivities. Drumbeats fill the streets of Palma that morning. And children gather in Plaça Cort to feed the hungry dragon with hot peppers, his favorite food.

The next day is traditionally Sant Sebastià kids day at Parc de la Riera. An exciting program with all kinds of activites like acrobatics and clowns, story telling, workshops and games attracts children of all ages.

Come on Baby, Light my Fire

Another highlight of the program is the Revetla de Sant Sebastià on January 19, when the Drac de na Coca will ignite the first of the many bonfires in the city center. That night, the entire old town is one big stage for numerous popular musicians and bands, who perform until well after midnight.

Live Acts on Different Stages

For several years, now, a few neighborhood initiatives from Canamunt and Calatrava are celebrating their alternative version of Sent sa Bèstia. With quite a different kind of live acts on several plazas in their barrios.

Dancing with the Devils

The celebrations will end with a grand finale on January 28, the traditional correfoc. When fierce demons and dragons roam the street of the old town, scaring away the evil spirits with huge fireworks, smoke and terrifying roar. A spectacular night, not for the faint of heart. If they come at you, you better take cover. But if you’re not so easily frightened, you can dance with the wild guys under the spark-spitting fire wheels.
