Sometimes a favorite piece reminds you of an encounter, a holiday, or a happy place where you got it. The real souvenirs are items that carry sweet memories. Like the essence of the Mediterranean, a scent or a taste, the way of living. Not some cheap plastic from far away but traditional craft or a local specialty. For those who don’t live on the island permanently or spend the season abroad, we put together 12 ideas to take a piece of Mallorca with you. To treat yourself, or as a gift for your loved ones. Carefully selected from local stores but also available online.
1. Roasted Almonds
A perfect snack for any occasion, the organic roasted almonds from Fet a Sóller are a hearty and healthy bite of Mallorca.
2. Woolen Sweater
Designed on the island where sheep have been an integral part of the agriculture for centuries. Suite13 LAB creates fashion that is as beautiful as it is sustainable.
3. Babutxes
Another way to stay warm and cozy on cold winter days are the traditional house slippers still made on Mallorca. At Alpargatería La Concepción you get them with leather or rubber soles.
4. Eau de Perfume
SLOW smells like the scent of the orange valley on a sunny day in spring. The perfume by Antic Mallorca is available at the Alameda Shop in Sóller.
5. Natural Cosmetics
These days, the skin particularly asks for moisturizing care products. The Mallorcan laboratory Tot Herba only uses certified organic ingredients from the island. Colmado Sant Jaume offers a nice selection.
6. Fabrics
The typical llengües pattern requires an elaborate process that only few manufactures master, today. Teixits Vicens in Pollença creates traditional and new products bearing the signature design.
7. Organic Honey
Mel Caramel harvests its honey from small, sustainable apiaries on Mallorca. If you are lucky, you’ll find the beekeeper’s stand at one of the local markets. Otherwise, simply order a jar online.
8. Flannel Shirt
MEWS is the label of Palma’s leading menswear store La Principal. The flannel shirt, however, can be perfectly worn boyfriend-style.
9. Olive Oil
There is a range of olis de Mallorca. And one olive oil that I particularly like for its special ingredient: love. Esment has a unique story, buying their products is a way to become part of it.
10. Pottery
Food always connects you with a place and its people. And so do the plates and bowls it is served in. Since 1860, Terra Cuita has been cultivating the craft of pottery with many lovely designs.
11. Coffee
Mistral coffee is roasted on Mallorca. Whether you enjoy a cup of coffee at Mistral Coffee House, at home or on the go, it’s a great way to enjoy the taste of the island.
12. Senalla
Just pack everything in a senalla, the typical Mallorcan wicker basket. There’s a large selection at Mimbreria Vidal, one of the last traditional basket shops in Palma. And feel like going to the beach, even if you’re only doing your groceries.
