**** Sorry to say that La Casa del Mapa closed down. Sure, GPS has long taken over but for me it’s a true loss.****
With all our smartphones and tablets you might think of maps as outdated instruments for navigating through unknown territory. Actually, I still love to plan trips with my index finger and let it search for the perfect route – say, for today’s bicycle trip in the mountains, or to the secluded bay where we want to spend the whole day, or for the round-trip of the country I always wanted to explore. And in doing so, anticipating the pleasures and excitements of the real journey. La casa del mapa truly is the house of maps, the home of destinations.
Follow me on a trip to this cave-like store in the archway underneath Carrer Conquistador. It always reminds me of the bridge of a big ship. My father was a captain, sailing all over the world. I often ran home from school, checking for his letters with the foreign stamps. And on the globe he brought me on my 10th birthday, I followed his ship on its way to exotic countries like Belize, Surinam or Singapore.
La Casa del Mapa not only offers a huge choice of maps about Palma, Mallorca and the Balearic Islands in different scales. They also provide material of the major cities around the world, globes in all kinds of sizes and makings, and quite some beautiful cartographic instruments, such as telescopes, compasses, and sextants. In case you don’t like planning ahead, at all, follow the stars. And take care!
