„I hate reality but it’s still the best place to get a good steak.“ While Woody Allen probably thought of New York City his statement always reminds me of a restaurant in Santa Catalina: Diecisiete Grados, right on the buzzing Carrer de la Fábrica, and one of my favorite places if it comes to solomillo. I love sitting at one of the tables right on the street, in the thick of it, among all the night owls cruising up and down the street.
But Diecisiete Grados is not only a great destination for your carnal desires. The menu comprises a great mix of authentic Mallorcan dishes like arroz negro (black rice), different bacalaos (codfish), huevos rotos (varieties of scrambled eggs), ensaladas and tapas para picar (to nibble on). And make sure to check the wine list! With its huge selection of wines from all over Spain it makes an impressive reading – and a tasty drinking, too. My very favorite is Om, a deep red blend of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet, and Mantonegro. The name Diecisiete Grados (17 degrees) by the way refers to the right temperature for red wine.
Even before La Fabrica was redesigned and turned into a lovely pedestrian area, the street has always been a great spot for socializing – where Palmesanos as well as visitors from all over the world would come together, drink and dine and have a good time. Today, it is basically one long row of bars and restaurants of all sorts and origins. Enjoy!
