There are few places with an equally historic and romantic atmosphere. Sa Torre de Santa Eugenia is an oasis of tranquility. The typical Mallorcan country manor in the rural center of the island has been family-owned since 1550. Today, the brothers Pedro and Victoriano run a bodega, guest rooms and the unique restaurant. Where you can enjoy a candlelight dinner among wine barrels in a medieval cellar.
The five-course tasting menu contains all the flavors of the island. Like the cream of prawns with poached egg. Or the salmon millefeuille with gorgonzola cheese and bacon on green asparagus, a mouthwatering variation of surf ‘n‘ turf. Sa Torre’s bodega offers a choice of wines both from Mallorca and the peninsula. The dark red Natiu from their own vineyard went very well with the duck confit.
The restaurant is located in the former wine cellar. With its massive stone walls and classic arches, the solid columns and a high ceiling of almost nine meters it compares to a cloister. The reason for this architecture, I learned from Pedro, is the rocky ground. So instead of digging they built a big hall. This allowed the warm air to rise and leave the barrels at a good temperature. Pretty cool.
Sa Torre de Santa Eugenia is one of the island’s marvelous agrotourism fincas, today. If you take a stroll through the garden before dinner, you can smell the soil in the warm air. Sitting by the pond, the frogs in the reeds will entertain you. Let your gaze wander over the vineyards and breathe a moment of the past in the here and now.
