It’s just an easy hike, but exciting nonetheless. The ancient watchtower Torre Picada is part of a network of observation posts that formed an early warning system around the entire island. Not far from Port de Sóller, the climb takes barely half an hour. The narrow road winds slowly up and soon turns into an unpaved path. 

Past terraced slopes with old and twisted olive trees, the view becomes more impressive after each bend. Once you arrive at the tower a rare panorama of the Tramuntana mountains unfolds, with a Puig Major still wearing its white winter cap. And to your feet the Mediterranean spreads out in all shades of blue. But watch out. Not only the view is breathtaking, here. 

From the Torre Picada towards the point overlooking the bay of Sóller the trail runs right along the ridge. And depending on the weather it can get pretty windy on the Northwestern coast of Mallorca. Find yourself a sheltered place and enjoy a little picnic with family or friends. If you didn’t bring a snack, you can still treat yourself to an ice cream back down on the promenade in Port de Sóller.

Throughout its history Mallorca was the target of countless attacks, and pirates have also been active in the Mediterranean for a long time. The surveillance system of watchtowers alerted the authorities in Palma whenever enemies approached by sea. Today, the talaies make attractive destinations for hikers, particularly the younger ones.
