Taste of the North: El Vasco

If you like Spanish food, you will love Basque cuisine. The northern province is characterized by its own language and culture. Some of our friends even consider the kitchen one of the best in the whole country. Thus we met with them at El Vasco to indulge in the taste of the North.

I had passed the restaurant many times on my way back and forth from Palma to Sóller. Located right next to the magnificent Jardines de Alfabia, just before the ascent to the Coll de Sóller. And yet, I had not been there until recently. But the restaurant is very popular with both locals and visitors. So you better reserve a table in advance.

We shared a couple of starters, including delicious crispy artichokes and a juicy oxtail sandwich. Of course, we had to try marmitako de atún, the classic Basque seafood stew. Followed by merluza cooked at low temperature and served with a pitch black squid sauce. Only to be topped off by a traditional pantxineta and El Vasco`s signature cheesecake that melted on the tongue.

The winter sun shines warmly in the spacious yet cozy guest room. Harbinger of a time to come when you can also enjoy lunch or dinner in the patio or on the terrace of El Vasco. Hardcore fans of Basque lifestyle, however, meet under the flag of Athletic de Bilbao in the rustic and rather shaded interior. Whatever you prefer, El Vasco is a wonderful place to relish Basque cuisine.
