Looking at the coastline from the sea gives you a fresh perspective. Literally and in a metaphorical way. So I was thrilled when friends invited us to a boat trip around Mallorca. We started in Port d’Andratx and set course towards Sa Dragonera. I’ve always enjoyed the boat ride on the way to this diving spot.

Following the coast along the ridge of the Tramuntana the steep cliffs are just breathtaking. Soon we pass Cap Fabioler with its spectacular view of the dragon island. Although I know that the mirador on the bluffs is more than 400 meters high, looking up the wall from sea level is something else entirely. 

The rocks are layered like pieces of art. And the intense green of the trees clinging to the mountains vies with the deep blue of the Mediterranean. Once you steer the boat to one of the small bays the color changes to an incredible turquoise. An unmistakable sign that we can anchor in the sand without damaging the seagrass. 

That I knew already from the diving excursions. I love to watch the captain reading the sea charts, avoiding shoals and calculating with wind and current. But almost as much as I love the boat trip around Mallorca I do like the breaks. Diving into the crystal clear water, swimming with the fish until everybody is hungry. And happily sharing a picnic on deck. 

With the gentle rocking of the waves you could easily doze off. But excited as we are and with the wind freshening up, we go for a little roller-coaster experience. Fortunately, nobody on board got seasick. And when we reached the harbor, we enjoyed a couple of drinks on the promenade. Drunk though on joy and happiness.
