Colorful dresses flutter in the soft breeze like flags. In the air, the smell of coffee and charcoal. Professional dealers, bargain hunters and curious visitors stroll along the stands. Two early birds drag a pair of Thonet chairs towards the parking lot, proud of their trove. At the Consell flea market you’ll find things that you didn’t even know they existed. But it’s also the place where you get that one little piece you have always been looking for.
A Sunday morning on the Mercat de Consell is like a journey through time and island history. Furnishings from the clearances of households and farms remind you of a Mallorca that many tourists hardly get to know anymore.
And then there are those mementos of our own past. I love to browse through the covers of LPs while the music of first flirts and parties is playing in my head. A little later I wonder whether this old pedal car wouldn’t make a great gift for the new home of a friend.
The colorful jumble of vintage furniture at many bars comes right here from the Consell flea market. These iron chairs may have seated students in a class room, now they are about to furnish a café in Santa Catalina. And I am taking home a beautiful retro style dress, today.
