Pleasant aromas trigger positive feelings. That’s exactly what happens when I take the first bite of our appetizer, an aubergine dip with roasted sesame on a piece of home made bread. And what was actually just a lunch break became a most tasty culinary round-trip across Mediterranean kitchens. Rich in seasoning, with loads of fresh herbs, fruit and vegetables. Muaré opened a few months ago in Pere Garau, the lively neighborhood just off the Avenidas. And soon became a popular address in the barrio that attracts people from all over Mallorca.
Further stations on our Mediterranean journey were carrot-orange salad and cucumber in a light yoghurt sauce with dill and borage. The perfect starter for hot days. Muaré’s menu includes Levantine classics like hummus, falafel, taboulé or couscous, but also a couple of fancy burgers and llonguets. Ingredients are seasonal, zero km and mostly eco. They come from the popular Pere Garau market or from local farmers. Maroccan Chef Jalal brings together passion and profound knowledge of both the Arab as well as the Southern European cuisine.
Muaré is the project of Alejandra and Maribel Bordoy and Imat Bomouche. The two sisters also run ABA Art Lab, together with Maribel’s husband Imat they created a beautiful restaurant. The interior design of their Cantina Mediterránea features plenty of light wood and carefully select details, most of them manufactured by local artisans on Mallorca like the glass lamps by Gordiola.
The large table right at the entrance seats a whole family or a big group of friends. Or friends to be. I particularly like the concept of bringing people together, of integrating not only the different cuisines of the Mediterranean but also the people who come from all around the mare nostrum to Mallorca. Bring a bottle of wine, if you like. For that’s another thing which is different at Muaré: They don’t offer wine but you are encouraged to bring your own. As if it were a friend’s house, already.
In the meantime, Muaré slightly changed their concept. They specialized in take-away and catering, but you can also enjoy their dishes at the bar along the windows. And the food is still fab.
