A flock of sheep, black pigs, geese and ducks, dogs and cats gather in the villages and towns on the island. Some of them patiently waiting, others excited and a little nervous about what’s to come. It’s Sant Antoni, today. When Mallorca celebrates the patron saint of animals. With music and dance, dimonis and fires. But also with the blessing of animals as well as pets.
The beneïdes have a long tradition on the Balearic Islands. For centuries, the farmers sought protection for their animals from diseases with the holy water at Sant Antoni. In rural areas, many farm animals are still blessed. But more and more people nowadays also ask for a blessing for their pets. In villages and towns but also in the city of Palma.
Pet owners gather in front of the cathedral from where they parade together to the Church Sant Miquel. Led by mounted police and a marching band they pass the parliament building and the town hall. Cross Plaça Major and eventually enter the narrow shopping street. Curiously watched by locals and visitors.
At the Basilika Sant Miquel the church service ends and the parish priest takes his place on the stage outside. Flanked by the mayor and other officials he blesses the pets and animals passing by with their owners.
The moment the holy water sprinkles the heads of the animals and sometimes also their keepers the faces of the humans open up. Showing an expression of redeem, hope and above all affection for their beloved.
