Most of the signature cycling routes on Mallorca lead through the Tramuntana mountains. Lesser known but no less attractive are some of the holy hills. The first sanctuaries were built in the 13th century after the Christian conquest by Jaume I. Scattered in marvelous places all over the island, many of them offer breathtaking panoramic views.
Sant Salvador
One of those highlights is Puig de Sant Salvador near Felanitx. A road of perfectly curved serpentines leads straight up to the top. From the Cristo Rei Monument 510 meters above sea level you can overlook the entire southeast of Mallorca. The monastery itself looks like a fortress but it even houses a small hotel and a café with a lovely terrace.
Santuari de Consolació
Hardly known although in the neighborhood of Santanyi is the Santuari de Consolació. There is not really much of a hill but the view of the coast and the hinterland is stunning nonetheless. If you want to avoid the sandy lane on the last few meters to the top, you can shoulder your bike and take the sandstone staircase straight up the sanctuary.
Ermita de Bonany
A rather popular destination for visitors is the Ermita de Bonany. A short climb from Petra where cyclists from all over the island love to take a break on the town square. Next time you get there, take a little detour to the holy hill. Enjoy the view, pay a visit to the chapel and discover an alternative place to rest, provided you bring your own snack.
Santuari de Cura
No less than three sanctuaries nestle on the slope along the road from Randa to the Santuari de Cura. The elevation close to Algaida is the highest point in the center of the island and attracts attention from afar with its distinctive radar sphere. Looks like somebody had teed up a gigantic golf ball. The café on the top of the hill with its great terrace is a popular place for lunch or coffee.
Santa Magdalena
To the northwest Inca’s local mountain Puig de Santa Magdalena beckons. Although just about 300 meters high, the panoramic view from the terrace of the medieval monastery is amazing. Overlooking the Tramuntana mountain range from Puig de Galatzó to Puig Major to the bay of Pollença. On the weekend locals love to make excursions to the picnic area on the hill.
