In many cultures it is a custom to drive away evil spirits at the beginning of a new year. On the island, though, January is high season for demons. And while they usually look scary, the dimonis on Mallorca are not actually evil but above all naughty. They take devilish delight in playing tricks on people and giving them a good scare. And they just love all kinds of noise and fireworks.
Sant Antoni
The colorful hustle and bustle reaches its first climax in mid-January with the Sant Antoni celebrations. Large bonfires are lit all over Mallorca on the eve of January 17. There is singing and dancing. And the dimonis are up to mischief. On the holiday itself, animal blessings take place in many towns and villages.
Know Your Dimoni

Sant Sebastià
Sant Antoni is celebrated all over the Balearic Islands. The major event in Palma, though, is Sant Sebastià, the festival in honor of the city’s patron saint. Places and streets are filled with music and dancing, bonfires and barbecues. Although the actual holiday is January 20, there is an extensive program of events around this date.
Correfoc
In the end, dragons and dimonis on Mallorca join forces in a spectacular fire run, the Correfoc. When the Drac de na Coca once again parades through the streets of Palma, spitting fire. Accompanied by hundreds of dimonis and a deafening noise.
