The former maritime trade exchange is a monument in itself. Today, La Lonja also regularly houses extraordinary exhibitions. The recent highlight is an exhibition by Jaume Plensa in Palma called Mirall. Showing two stainless steel sculptures floating in the hall. Charging the magnificent place with light and darkness.
The artist named them Invisible Laura and Invisible Rui Rui. Contemporary Janus heads facing future and past, or mirror images, reflections of the present? However, they cast a spell on everybody. No one can escape the magic.
People wander around the faces, some secretly and shyly touch the steel as if this would help to grasp the aura.
To Jaume Plensa the sculptures are our faces mirroring themselves in the faces of others. Of lovers and friends, of strangers and acquaintances. No doubt, a fascinating work of duality. Of body and shadow, day and night, joy and pain.
And the closer you look the more you’ll doubt what you really see. Are the sculptures really facing each other or placed back-to-back? Are they mirroring each other or looking at the visitor?
There is only one way to find out, a visit at La Lonja. The exhibition of „Mirall“ by Jaume Plensa in Palma runs until 15 February 2025. Opening hours during the winter months are 10.30-13.30 h and 16.00-19.00 h, admission is free.
