The first thing you discover when approaching Capdepera is the triangular castle stretching across the hill. With its high walls, pinnacles and defense towers Castell de Capdepera is one of the largest and best-preserved fortifications on Mallorca, today.
Built more than 700 years ago around an ancient watchtower, the medieval fortress bears witness of an eventful history. On a clear day you can even make out Menorca in the distance from the top of the castle. Actually, Mallorca’s little sister island is the reason why the castle was built right here.
Legend has it that King Jaume I. reconquered Menorca from the Moors with a ploy. He ordered hundreds of fires to be lit on the hill of Capdepera. Making it look as if a large army was preparing to attack.
Night after night the king’s men lit the bonfires until the Moors were so frightened that they surrendered. A stone plaque at the Castell de Capdepera commemorates that they signed a peace treaty and swore allegiance to Jaume I.
Soon after, his son decided to have the Castell de Capdepera built at the very same place. As part of the cultural heritage of the island the castle is open to the public all year round. The entrance fee of 3 Euros is used to preserve the complex which makes a great excursion for the whole family.
