It looks like a bazaar. Artists, maestros and makers from around the world show their heritage textile works carefully curated for the XTANT Makers Market 2024. Accompanied by pieces of art, scents and accessories. All displayed in one of the most emblematic patios on Mallorca. A feast for the senses that anyone interested in beauty, culture and craftsmanship should not miss.
We all know that clothes make the man. But there is much more to textiles than just apparel. Since humans began to cover themselves an immeasurably rich variety of materials, techniques and fabrics has developed. XTANT Roots 2024 celebrates the art of textiles with a global gathering of textile artisans and creatives. From May 9-15 there will be workshops, exhibitions and the unique market at three marvelous locations in Palma.
Learn about hand spinning and weaving. About Moroccan embroidery, or bandhani, an ancient kind of tie-dye, from master craftspeople and designers. Traditional techniques are the focus of a series of special workshops that take place at Es Baluard Museum and Hotel Convent de la Missió, a former 17th century monastery.
While you have to sign up for the workshops the makers market at Can Vivot is open to the public. A spectacular setting that at first glance is reminiscent of an Arab bazaar. Where you find colorful fabrics draped on wooden frames, large woven tapestries rolled in straw baskets, richly embroidered shirts, robes and kaftans, and aromatic scents and essences.
Five days of inspiration, talks and discussions about the importance of looking back in order to value heritage and move forward. Hence this year’s motto “Roots”. XTANT 2024 is one of the most comprehensive representations of global textile heritage knowledge.
XTANT Roots 2024 runs from Thursday 9 May to Monday 13 May. Find the complete program, right here.
