Now is the season to experience an exceptional phenomenon. The time to immerse yourself into the scent of the island. The orange trees are blooming on Mallorca, again. But even more impressive than the precious white flowers is their alluring smell. An aroma that you instantly recognize once you have got to know it. In the countryside but sometimes also unexpectedly in the heart of Palma.
Everyone knows the almond blossom that became emblematic of the Balearics. But no less popular than the almonds are the oranges and lemons of Mallorca. The export of citrus fruit used to be an important economic factor. Ships sailed from Port de Sóller to Marseille and connected Mallorca with France. Until today, the Sóller valley is famous for its naranjas.
Only few people know, though, that during the orange blossom season the trees bear fruit and flowers at the same time. A combination of white blossoms against a backdrop of lush green with orange dots. The easiest and probably best way to enjoy the fruit is a freshly squeezed orange juice. Offered in most bars along your hikes in the Tramuntana. Or you suck the juice right from the wedge. A welcome refreshment during a stop at cycling tours across the island.
The fragrance itself you can actually even take home. A few local brands create perfumes using the precious petals. What a wonderful way to recall the hike past the orchards with the orange trees blooming on Mallorca. It only lasts a few weeks. But long enough to fall in love with the scent of the island.
