The beautiful handmade trumpet caught me right away. And indeed, the handcrafted instrument was awarded one of the coveted Premios Artesania de Mallorca. On display now in an exhibition along with other objects of the island’s fine arts and crafts. Like the cardigan of homespun wool made by María Eugenia Marcote. The delicious gató, the almond cake by Forn de sa Placa. Or the different pieces of jewelry.
I love the eclectic selection of traditional artisanry in modern yet timeless designs. Diego Piñeiro Guillén won the 2021 Mallorca Artisan Product and Design Award for the construction of his trumpet. He studied at Thein Brass in Bremen. The only place in Europe where you can still apprentice to build brass instruments.
Anna Lena Kortmann on the other hand came from Germany to Mallorca. Her love of craftsmanship led her to to Cordats Guillem in Llcumajor. One of the few traditional wicker weavers left on the island where she learned this craft from scratch. Today, she manufactures her own designs at her atelier Studio Jaia. The stool Puput is a classic, already.
The Premios de Artesania de Mallorca are awarded by the Consell de Mallorca every year. For the first time now, the winners and a selection of participating artists are being presented to the public until April 2. The Centro Cultural la Misericordia is a most worthy place for this remarkable exhibition.
