The sky an endless blue, no single cloud, and the sea like a mirror. Reflecting the low winter sun that already feels warm on your skin in the late morning. Nothing moves, including me. In the absence of wind even the seagulls stay on their lookout. The holidays seem far away, although it’s only been a few days since Christmas, New Year and Los Reyes Magos. When all of a sudden the heartbeat of the island slows down. We call it Las Calmas de Enero.
The poetic term for the calms of January describes a meteorological phenomenon. An area of high pressure in northern Europe which often occurs around this time of the year. Treating us to a series of sunny days with spring-like temperatures on Mallorca. And frosty nights with unobstructed views of the starry sky. It feels as if both nature and people on the island take a deep breath.
Actually, it’s the perfect time for cycling and hiking. Still I have been terribly cold during a quick lunch break, recently. Because the terrace of the only bar open on my route was in the shadow of the neighboring church. But returning into the sun felt like a warm hug.
And in no time I fall into the rhythm of nature, slowing down myself. Enjoying the crisp view of the Tramuntana mountains, the endless sea and the peaceful beaches. All the fat yellow blossoms on the green meadows. Sheep and lambs under almond trees that are already starting to bloom again. And knowing without thinking that although it may still take some time, summer is on the way. I can feel it.
