Down by the sea: S'Arenal Portocolom

Lighthouses have always offered orientation. If you follow the road to the Far de Portocolom, you will pass a beautiful bay. It’s just called S’Arenal, the beach. And S’Arenal Portocolom is also the name of the chiringuito, which has long since made a name for itself. At first glance, the scenery looks like a picnic in the sand. Indeed, the beach bar atmosphere is extremely relaxed. The tiny kitchen offers great bar food and excellent fish dishes.

No wonder, a place can hardly be closer to the source. Portocolom is not only the largest natural harbor on Mallorca, it is also an important fishing port. Feet in the sand, head in the clouds, we enjoy grilled lengua and dorada with tumbet. Blue wooden tables and chairs are loosely grouped under shady tamarisk trees. You can also sit in the open with a drink and tapas, right in the first line of the sea. S’Arenal Portocolom has ushered in the new season this week. But already it is hard to get a place without a reservation.

Once you have taken a seat, you quickly forget the time. Let your eyes wander over the bay, where the brave already dare a few swims. Small children dig in the sand while the adults order another glass of wine, a drink or a coffee. And some regulars already reserve a table for the next visit. If you are up to a short walk you can actually reach the lighthouse just a few steps up the road.
