We all know those places, a café, a bar, a corner store that somehow looks like it’s been there forever. Like Mama Carmen’s in Santa Catalina. Alejandro opened his wonderful small kitchen only two years ago. Yet its colorful vintage furniture under the trees next to la Glorieta de Pau Casals belongs to the plaça just as much as the iconic pavillon.
Mama Carmen’s is popular for its specialty coffee but their toasts are simply as good as their roasts. I love the spicy version with avocado, rocket, feta and fried egg on beetroot artisanal bread. Or the one with hummus, avocado, and red cabbage sprouts, it’s just as delicious. And no doubt, Mama Carmen’s is where you get some of the best mueslis in town. They come with homemade vegan granola and loads of fresh fruit.
It’s the people who make Mama Carmen’s the familiar place it is. Alejandro dedicated his café to his mother Carmen but in fact it’s part of the rather young and vibrant specialty coffee scene in Palma. Whether you are a coffee aficionado, hungry for a late breakfast, some feel good food or just looking for a lovely hangout place, Mama Carmen’s is a safe bet.
