**** Sadly, Amenamen closed its store for good in April 2017. ****
These days, many people are still looking for Christmas gifts for their nearest and dearest. You can search the internet, of course, but I prefer to take my time and find inspiration in my favorite shops in town. At Amenamen, for instance, Joan Amengual’s bright modern store next to busy Plaça Major. Don’t worry, there’s nothing religious to it – Amenamen is just a play-on-words with his last name.
Instead, you find a nicely curated selection of things for your home – dishes, rugs, bags, and accessories for bathroom and kitchen. Joan’s store concept is based on fair trade, local responsibility, natural resources and sustainability, so most of Amenamen’s selection comes from small European manufactures: backpacks from Ölend, towels and brushes from Iris Hantverk, rugs from Gur, soft cases for phones or laptops and other small bags from Pijama, or fancy little fish-shaped pouches from Don Fisher. And so much more. As Joan loves to introduce new products and new designers, Amenamen’s portfolio changes constantly.
The heart of Amenamen, however, is pottery. Joan’s family comes from Pòrtol, a small village near Santa Maria del Cami popular for it’s long history of pottery. When he opened his studio in December 2014, Joan’s idea was to continue the family tradition, yet with his own modern design and colors. All the beautiful cups, plates, bowls and vases in his store are still made on the potter’s wheels in Pòrtol.
With Suite 13 and Maravillas Bags vis-à-vis and Gustar just around the corner there is a small community of stores in that neighborhood, now, that care for local, fair and sustainable products. Like!
