**** Sadly, Mãos closed again. ****
Scandinavian design has always been special but over the last few years fashion from Denmark, Norway and Sweden has become real popular. And not only for hipsters in major cities around the world. A new and unique place for young urban outfits in Palma just opened this fall: Mãos. I had stopped at La Molienda for a coffee to go and was strolling along Carrer Caputxines when I discovered the race bike in this simple yet extremely stylish holder on the wall of a shop I hadn’t noticed before. It was the very same bike holder I had spotted before in one of the coffee table books at my favorite café. Now, you won’t find any specific bike apparel at Mãos but many selected items fitting the generation that trades a car for a cool new bike.
Tomeu Oliver, Javier García-Brazales and Dani Pascual setup their store in a beautiful basement vault of a gothic city palace just opposite Convento Madres Capuchinas. They go for selected brands like Samsoe & Samsoe, Dr. Denim, Les Deux (with Mãos being their only outlet in Spain) or Original Penguin, and have a nice choice of Daniel Wellington watches in stock. A big brown Chesterfield sofa invites you to pause and chat with one of the three guys on duty, while your sweetheart is still browsing through their wonderful garments, shoes and bags. My personal favorites by the way are the soft light bio-cotton shirts from Thinking Mu.
Items at Mãos come in small quantities, so – except for the Nike sneakers – you might be the only one on the island wearing that particular sweater, shirt, or pair of pants. That’s only a disadvantage if you couldn’t make up your mind one day, and come back on the next. Because you might not find your favorite piece, anymore. It’s not gone, you know, it’s just that someone else was faster than you.
