Time and again, I am impressed by the wide choice of mediterranean dishes in Mallorcan restaurants. That’s no surprise, with the abundance of fruits and vegetables growing on the island. Nonetheless, it’s not always easy to find regional produce in a nearby store, given the numerous visitors and the increasing interest to buy local. And if you prefer eco, there are even fewer places. Were it not for the mercats, and in particular the colmados, the neighborhood stores. Es Badulake is a very special one – true Palmallorcastyle.
The narrow shop just around busy Carrer Paraires features its own terrific SOMA facade and focuses on local and eco products. But you’ll be surprised about the choice of other groceries in this tiny space, so at the end of your grocery list there is no need to go to a supermarket any more. You also get very tasty snacks and sandwiches, and there is usually a homemade plato del dia for lunch, too.
Or choose among the several types of tomatoes, for Pa amb oli, a simple salad, or a caprese. Get a bunch of fresh basil, add olive oil and flor de sal – and lunch is ready. For me fresh albahaca has the addictive touch of coffee – the very smell of it makes me inhale deeply and smile with anticipation for the next plate, or cup respectively. At this time of the year, I’m craving fresh figs – and the ones at Badulake’s are unmatched. The owners grow them on their finca, and they are so sweet and tender, just the perfect desert.
